Stress symptoms can affect our body, our thoughts and feelings and our behavior. We are all exposed to stress and respond in different ways. At the most basic level, stress is our body’s response to pressures from a situation or life event. We feel stress when multiple competing demands are placed on us. It can be caused by the everyday pressures of balancing family and work, managing your finances, when coping with a challenging relationship or from traumatic situations. When we feel stressed we become frustrated and nervous.
Stressful life experiences can trigger levels of agitation and anxiousness from worry, fear and an uneasiness about things that could destabilize us, as well as being anxious about the anxiousness itself. This doesn’t fade into the distance once the threat is mediated. It hangs around for the long haul, and can cause significant impairment in social, occupational, and other important areas of functioning.
Stress and the anxiousness that it can cause are both part of being human, but both can become problems if they last for a long time or have an impact on our well-being or daily life.
