Self-Esteem & Confidence Issues
Living with low self-esteem and confidence can harm you mentally and lead to problems like depression and anxiety.
Low self-esteem and pessimism can make it difficult to accept responsibility and constructive criticism, which can hinder you from opportunities and also prevent you from taking on new challenges; consequently, blocking you from having fulfilling experiences in life.
It can also ruin important relationships.
Low self-esteem, which affects our emotions, our thoughts, and behavior, shows itself in how we perceive and connect to ourselves and others. This can occur for many reasons, including disapproval from people you value, putting your self-worth in circumstances that are out of your control, and when they don’t go the way you want, causes you to feel like a failure and makes you feel depressed.

We are all in favour of healthy self-esteem, but improving and nurturing it seems to be surprisingly tough. “Esteem” means to “appraise, value, rate, weigh, and estimate”. How we value ourselves reflects the way we think, feel and act. Positive self-esteem is also attractive psychologically since it can help predict certain outcomes, such as levels of happiness, academic achievement, criminal behavior, and satisfaction in marriage or relationships.
Low self-esteem can have adverse consequences. It can:
- Lead to increased probability of depressed feelings, anxiousness, over-eating and obesity, over sensitivity, stress, or loneliness;
- Cause problems with romantic relationships, friendships, academic skills or job performance;
- Create constant comparison with others, perfectionist thinking, high self-blame, inability to try
new things, fear of failure, inability to accept compliments;
- In some cases low self-esteem can lead to increased vulnerability to alcohol and drug abuse.
These negative effects work in a vicious circle, negative thoughts and negative expectations reinforce poor self-esteem and the chance of failure, leading to self-blame and even lower self-esteem.
